Latino Ministers Urge Illegal Immigrants to Boycott Census – AP

Filed under: Immigration,Walking in truth — Rev. Tim Lehmann @ 12:41 pm

In the AP story about illegal immigrants Rev. Miguel Rivera and his National Coalition of Latino Clergy and Christian Leaders are urging undocumented aliens to boycott the next census. I will readily admit that I am torn over the issue of undocumented immigrants. On one hand I am sympathetic with their plight. I am particularly upset about the fact that enforcement often separates families. I agree immigration law reform is needed now.

On the other hand, the Bible tells us that we are to follow the law of the land. The apostle Paul said “Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers. For there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God. Whosoever therefore resisteth the power, resisteth the ordinance of God: and they that resist shall receive to themselves damnation. For rulers are not a terror to good works, but to the evil. Wilt thou then not be afraid of the power? do that which is good, and thou shalt have praise of the same: For he is the minister of God to thee for good. But if thou do that which is evil, be afraid; for he beareth not the sword in vain: for he is the minister of God, a revenger to execute wrath upon him that doeth evil. Wherefore ye must needs be subject, not only for wrath, but also for conscience sake.” (Romans 13:1-5)

It upsets me that someone who calls himself a Christian leader (or who has been given leadership roles) has come out in direct opposition of Biblical mandate. The Word specifically says we are to obey the government. Not when it is convenient, not when it benefits us financially, but always. The only exceptions are when man’s law violates God’s law. (Acts 5.29) We are not to pick and choose just because it is to our benefit.  Personally I can see no Biblical reason to illegally enter another country just because you are having trouble in your own. It’s illegal and the Bible says to obey the law.

Those who call themselves Christians then advocate actions that are plainly contrary to the Bible are at best, in error. If this is being done when they know what is written, then they are purposely leading others into sin; in the name of God. The Methodist Church should take action. From what I have read in the news, Rev. Rivera is bringing discrace to the name of God.
