The Virgin Birth

WHY IS THE VIRGIN BIRTH IMPORTANT?

“Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.” (Isaiah 7:14)

Yes, that’s the correct scripture. The Virgin Birth was foretold approximately 735 years before it happened. This is important, as it constitutes the very foundation of Christianity. Let’s take a look.

“Behold, a virgin shall conceive.” There is a miracle here. When the angel told Mary that she was going to have a baby, she didn’t question God’s ability to do this, but she was curious as to how. “And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God.” (Luke 1:35)

So this shows that Jesus was born of woman, without male sperm, DNA, etc. humanity was given to Jesus through this. His physical body was created when the egg was “quickened” or fertilized. How? All the Bible says is that the Holy Spirit would “come upon thee.” When the angel spoke to Mary, she understood what the English translations don’t convey. “Come upon” should be translated “supervening superimposition.” This doesn’t read very well and would be frequently misunderstood, so I understand why the translators used “come upon.” However, what it says is God will enter the world of man in a miraculous way. This is why the baby was to be called Immanuel (עמּנוּאל), which means, “With us [is] God.

But it’s not just the miracle of conception without a male contribution. In fact, that is the smallest part of the miracle. I said this was the very foundation of Christianity, right? Consider Paul’s words, “Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned:” (Romans 5:12)

The sin of Adam became racial sin, “by one man sin entered into the world” so we see that anyone born of man, would inherit this sin. If Jesus had a human father, He would not qualify as the perfect Passover Lamb. Jesus inherited not the nature of Adam, but the nature of His Father, God. Jesus was truly fully man (born of woman) and God (born from the Holy Spirit). Jesus spoke more that philosophical or spiritual truth when He called God His Father.

As the Son of יהוה, (Self-existent, eternal, I am what I am) Jesus was truly God incarnate. And this made Jesus the only possible “propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world.” (1 John 2:2) Without the virgin birth there would be no salvation! Without the virgin birth we would still be under the old covenant. We sing the old hymn, “Jesus paid it all,” and He did; only because of the virgin birth.

So, when you hear people talk about the “myth” of the Virgin Birth, or how it makes a good story you can let them know that if they call themselves a Christian, they have to believe in the literal virgin birth. The virgin birth makes salvation possible. Anything less cancels the saving power of the cross and makes Christianity a sham.
